Saturday, January 21, 2012, 4-5:15 p.m.Ballroom A, 3rd floor, Hynes Convention Center
U.S. Senator Scott Brown and Congressman Edward Markey will be the keynote speakers at this session, which will focus on federal deficit reduction and budget policies and their impact on Massachusetts cities and towns.Federal budget issues have been identified as a top concern by the MMA Board of Directors, which is why the Annual Meeting is devoting a major session to the topic.
With federal support considered key to a wide range of programs delivered at the local level, including public safety, infrastructure, education, and human services, local officials are anxiously watching the budget debates in Washington. Federal spending reductions could ultimately leave cities and towns scrambling to close budget gaps.
Note: U.S. Sen. John Kerry, who was previously scheduled to speak at this session, will be unable to attend due to unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances.
