Comedian Paul D’Angelo began doing stand-up performances while maintaining a full-time legal career under his real name, Paul Murphy.While working as an assistant district attorney in Essex County for 10 years and then as a criminal-defense attorney, D’Angelo revealed his humorous side as host of his own weekly show at Boston’s two premier comedy clubs, Nick’s Comedy Stop and the Comedy Connection.
In comedy circles, D’Angelo became known for his improvisational talent and array of intelligent humor delivered in an animated style. In 1994 and 1995, he was named Boston’s Best Comedian by Boston Magazine. In 2008, he appeared on the “NESN Comedy All-Stars” TV show.
D’Angelo is the writer, director, and co-star of the original sitcom pilot “A Fine Mess,” which was featured at the New York International Independent Film Festival in 2002. He is a co-star in the soon-to-be-released, feature-length motion picture “Stand-Up Guys,” directed by Rocco Urbisci.
He was a national finalist in the 1999 San Francisco International Comedy Competition, and a national finalist representing Boston in the Laughs Across America comedy search sponsored by the Las Vegas Comedy Festival. In 2005, he was a national finalist in the Sierra Mist/Improv Next Great Comic Search.
In 1989, he was chosen as a national finalist representing Boston in the Johnny Walker Comedy Search, and in 1997, he was a featured performer at the Montreal Just for Laughs International Comedy Festival.
D’Angelo has performed at casinos in Las Vegas and Atlantic City, on Norwegian Cruise Lines, and at many colleges.
He has opened for more than 40 recording artists, including Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Beach Boys, Chicago, and Aretha Franklin, as well as comedians George Carlin, Joan Rivers and Dennis Miller.
