After years of planning and development, the Princeton Municipal Light Department in mid-November began generating electricity from two 1.5 megawatt wind turbines.

The turbines on Wachusett Mountain will generate up to 40 percent of the town’s electricity, according to Jonathan Fitch, the municipal light department’s manager.

Planning for the project, Fitch said, dates to 2002, when the town was preparing to decommission eight small turbines that had been established in the mid-1980s. Those first-generation turbines accounted for a much smaller percentage of Princeton’s energy needs.

Fitch said his department plans to sell renewable energy certificates, or RECs, in order to recover part of the project’s $7.3 million cost. State regulations require investor-owned utilities to generate a minimum amount of renewable energy or they must purchase RECs from other producers.
