Natick alerts residents to financial assistance
November 12, 2008A flyer sent out with property tax bills is helping to make seniors and other residents of Natick more aware of the types of financial assistance that may be available to them.
Moira Munns, the towns’ human services director, said the town “started getting calls almost immediately” after residents received the information this fall.
The single-page, double-sided brochure, also available on the town’s Web site (www.natickma.org), lists about 30 programs and services under categories such as “Tax Assistance,” “Water/Sewer Assistance,” “Housing and Home Heating Assistance,” “Food, Clothing, Children and Housing,” and “Veterans’ Services.”
One reason the outreach effort has been successful, Munns said, “is that there were all sorts of departments that were able to pull together on this, rather than all of us sitting in our own little silos.”
The brochures were first sent out with tax bills last spring. Previously, said Selectman Josh Ostroff, “We didn’t have the coordinated outreach that’s most beneficial. Typically, when someone is eligible for one program, they’re eligible for other programs as well.”
He cited the example of one elderly woman who discovered she was entitled to $3,000 worth of exemptions and other forms of assistance.
“My view is that when you take advantage of an exemption, you’re not doing anything different than what we do when we claim our kids as an exemption on our tax forms,” Ostroff said.
