Tyngsborough committee to examine fiscal sustainability
August 25, 2008Seeking a strategy to endure a difficult fiscal climate, Tyngsborough is forming a committee to assess the sustainability of town and school operations and recommend ways to contain costs.
The “Strategic Financial Planning Committee” will consist of two members each from the Board of Selectmen, the Finance Committee and the School Committee, as well as one resident who is not a town official.
Selectman Karyn Puleo said the committee’s goal is to issue a written presentation in December, before budget preparations get under way for the next fiscal year. Recommendations for steps to be taken over the next three years could include consolidating departments and regionalizing or privatizing certain services.
“Every year we build a budget and every year we have to cut the budget,” Puleo said, reflecting a dynamic she described as unsustainable over the long term. “This is an attempt to see if there is a more efficient and effective way” to provide services.
She said the committee will look at ways that Tyngsborough can reduce energy costs in town and school buildings. It may also recommend the hiring of a grant writer as a means of putting the town in better position to obtain outside funding.
