Kielson elected MMA president; Tobey is VP
January 16, 2007Chesterfield Select Board member David Kielson is the new president of the MMA, and Gloucester Councillor Bruce Tobey is the new vice president.
The MMA board endorsed Kielson and Tobey as officers for 2007 following the association’s Annual Business Meeting on Jan. 13 in Boston.
Kielson, who succeeds Northampton Mayor Clare Higgins, is serving his sixth three-year term on the Select Board. He has been a member of the MMA Board of Directors for 13 years and has been chair of the MMA’s Fiscal Policy Committee for the past nine years. In 2001 he was president of the Massachusetts Selectmen’s Association.
Prior to moving to Massachusetts in 1983, Kielson was managing partner of a public accounting firm in the New York City area. He currently works as town accountant for three communities in western Massachusetts.
Tobey was first elected to the Gloucester City Council in 1986 and served as the city’s mayor for 10 years, ending in 2002. He returned to local government last year after winning an at-large seat on the City Council.
Tobey is a former board member of the National League of Cities, where he chaired the organization’s Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Steering Committee. He is currently a member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Local Government Advisory Commission, and he was a panelist at a United Nations conference on sustainable communities.
Tobey works as director of business development for Aquarion, a water supplier based in Bridgeport, Conn. He has both a law degree and a master’s in business administration from Suffolk University.
